Lucia lives with her 17-year old son Gabriel. Her husband left her eight years before, when their first daughter Anna died for leukaemia.

Lucia works in a hospice, in contact with terminal patients. Here she meets Giulio Redetti, a former professor who teaches her how to deal with her angst.

Meanwhile, Gabriel follows a reckless lifestyle to prove that living involves the risk of dying.
