Our Catholic education seeks to give our children a holistic education for life, centred on the Catholic faith.
Holy Innocents’ Primary School, the first Catholic co-educational Primary School in Singapore, embraces a mission of nurturing the potential in each child to the fullest and developing his character in a God-centred environment so as to prepare him for the challenges of the future and to serve the nation.
In this feature, two students from Holy Innocents’ Primary School share their experiences of their Catholic education and how it has shaped them.
Being in a Catholic school provides the environment to deepen our understanding of the Catholic faith. Being in the presence of Jesus, we must always put in our best effort and God will always be there to guide us.
The parable of the prodigal son has taught me much about forgiveness. I was able to forgive someone who repeatedly said and did things that hurt me, although the person did not come forward to seek forgiveness.
Important Lessons Learnt
Honesty and integrity are important to me. Learning from a past experience of not telling the truth and plucking up the courage to own up, I believe that being truthful is important as it helps us gain the trust of others and makes interactions better.
Courage also comes in the form of going out to help people who may be reluctant to share about their problems. Praying for the person and praying with the person further help to form and strengthen our relationship, and gives me opportunity to share about God with them.
Living my Faith
The school provides us with opportunities to help the needy through projects like ‘Food from the Heart ‘which contribute towards the welfare of the poor living near the school. It is important to extend whatever help and effort possible to help those who are in need.
My prayer for Catholic200SG is that those who have been away from church will go back to church, and that they will feel God’s presence in their lives.
I like being in a Catholic school because I feel good being part of a Catholic community. The school names the blocks after saints and we learn about these saints and the values they embrace.
Strengthening Our Faith
There are many events and programmes that cater to our faith to strengthen our understanding of the teachings of Jesus.
During school mass, I pay attention when the priest shares the homily. I have learnt more about the Gospel and I get to learn life lessons from the homily. In particular, the parable of the prodigal son reminds us to be merciful and to give others a chance, as well as to be forgiving and be more responsible in handling money.
School mates who are not Catholic also attend mass with us. They may not understand what we do so I try to explain to them. I also try to model the values of the bible so that they appreciate our faith and are able to encounter Jesus.
Living the Faith
I have learnt a lot about being a good Catholic and being responsible.
I learnt about discipline: being disciplined to focus on learning more efficiently, going for mass, praying and reading the bible. It is not about praying only when I need to pray or going for mass when there is a need to. I learn to speak to God through prayer and through this, I feel God is always beside me.
Having faith in Jesus and God, I know that He will always be there for me, that I will be supported. I am not scared to try things. With faith, I have the strength and correct mindset to overcome challenges. With these values, I am able to conduct myself well.
Important Lessons Learnt
Among the school’s core values, resilience stands out for me. It is important to have resilience, especially when we face challenges or obstacles. We have to clarify our doubts and stay focused on conquering obstacles.
Another value that is important is charity – to be kind and have a heart to help others. There are many charity donation drives and fund raising initiatives to help the people in need. We need to contribute to these as much as we can.
I pray that the Catholic Church will be strengthened and more people will become Catholics and we will make an impact on the world.
