Our Catholic education seeks to give our children a holistic education for life, centred on the Catholic faith. At the Catholic High School, children are inspired to place love as the motivation behind all their actions, and to do everything with love
In this feature, Rayson Oh and Sean Gan of Catholic High School, Primary share their experiences of their Catholic education and how it has shaped them.
The Catholic school environment is a holy atmosphere which makes me feel calm and reminds me of the presence of God, especially because I am able to attend mass often. I am most inspired when receiving the eucharist during mass; I feel treasured and loved as Jesus has sacrificed for me.
I make prayer the centre of each day; I often lead in school prayer sessions. I am also a lector during school masses.
Living the Values of Jesus
The bible passage about forgiving one another is important to me; it tells us we must forgive others not just once, but seventy-seven times. Thus, I feel it is important to give others a second chance, just like I am given a second chance when I make mistakes.
The values of honestly and trust are important too, not just for children, but even when we are adults. We need to carry through these values when we start working or are doing our own business.
I consistently remind myself to stay true to myself. I also drive myself to be caring and loving towards others. Putting others before self, be truthful and be genuine are what I believe strongly in. I also extend the love and care to my parents – especially when I observe that my parents are feeling down or stressed out.
My prayer for the Catholic Church is that the Church will remain everlasting, that it will flourish, and people will always give praise to God joyfully.
Being in a Catholic school allows me to be surrounded by Catholics whom I can identify with, and to grow closer to God at the same time.
God plays a great role in my life and He is always the one there for me. The parable of the lost sheep speaks a lot to me; the act of the shepherd going all out to find the lost sheep is an important lesson as I am reminded that God will always be there. Thus, I feel it is important to build a strong relationship with God.
I am engaged in sports outside school. When I do not perform well, I always find comfort in prayer, knowing that God is there to see me through. I always remind myself that whatever burden I carry, God is helping, ao I am not alone.
Living the Values of Jesus
Activities like mass and other faith-based activities are important as they impart values of Jesus. I learn to place values, such as putting others before self, not being selfish, being kind and caring at the top of my list.
Honesty and love for self are important as well to grow as a person. God gives us life and each life is precious so we must love ourselves and treasure life; and from there, we extend ourselves to others.
I try to be nice and understanding, and to look out for others. I believe that day-to-day acts of kindness go a long way in making a difference for others. Extending a helping hand, or words of kindness are ways to help others see God in us.
My prayer for the Catholic Church is that the Church will continue to grow and more people will come to encounter God.
